It isn't trying to light the whole room. This amber dome table lamp brings the light down to hand height, under a broad dome of smoked amber acrylic that warms everything it touches. Pull the chain, the wood warms, the room settles by a notch.

The dome is a half-sphere of smoked acrylic, perfectly smooth with no ribbing or pattern, 25 centimetres across for a total height of 50 centimetres: a real presence on a desk or console, not a night-light. The body is iron, polished on the top third, finished in walnut on the lower two-thirds, standing on a thick round base with a visible wood-grain texture. A small finial caps the top of the dome.

A softened light, never in the eyes

Beneath the dome, an opal white globe hides the source: nothing glares, the amber filters and spreads a round downward halo. It's an atmosphere light, the kind switched on at the end of the day in the corner of a desk, on a chest of drawers, or beside an armchair. Three settings: warm white for the most golden mood, cool white for a crisper light, or variable intensity to adjust as the evening goes on.

Plug in and go, nothing to fix to the wall

The lamp assembles in a few steps, no special tools, and plugs into a standard mains socket. E27 fitting, bulb included, wired for 90 to 260 V, it suits UK 230 V mains. It switches on with the bead pull-chain hanging under the dome, within easy reach, no cord switch to hunt for. Allow a stable surface at least 20 centimetres across for the base.
