A cocoon table lamp that veils the light instead of throwing it

Some lamps light a task, others give a room its temperature. This cocoon table lamp belongs to the second kind. Its white membrane holds the brightness, softens it, makes it almost tactile, then gives it back to the whole room: light escapes from the top, the bottom and the entire surface at once, in one continuous halo that never hurts the eye.

A sculpted cocoon, rib after rib

About twenty fine vertical ribs run in a single line, from the small circle at the top to the scalloped edge at the base. They are the wires of a white lacquered metal frame over which a membrane of artificial silk has been sprayed then hand-stretched: it bows gently between each rib, and the fibrous grain still reads from a metre away. The silhouette reads in three stages, a large sphere at the top, a pinched waist at the middle, a skirt that flares to a rounded scallop. Three sizes for three uses: Ø18 x H32cm for a bedside table, Ø30 x H48cm for a console, Ø35 x H58cm to hold a living room corner on its own.

An ivory glow, from evening into night

Lit, the membrane shifts from matt white to a warm ivory and lets its ribs show through as soft shadows. The halo rises to the ceiling and falls onto the furniture at the same time, which removes the dark ring a closed-shade lamp always leaves around itself. Expect 3 to 10 square metres of ambient coverage depending on the size chosen. The bulb stays your choice, and it decides the result: pick a warm white LED, 2700 to 3000K, 6 to 10W, that temperature is what gives the silk its ivory tone. A cool white bulb would turn it grey and undo the whole effect.

Screw in a bulb, plug in, that's it

The lamp rests on a low, discreet base, barely wider than the skirt, with a small switch on the front, within easy reach without hunting under the furniture. A white cord runs from the back of the base to a standard mains plug: no drilling, no electrician, no wall wiring. The fitting is a standard E27, the kind found everywhere, and the bulb is not included so you can choose its temperature. Wired for 90 to 260V, it suits UK 230V mains. Brightness isn't adjustable on the lamp itself, so dimming means a smart bulb or a dimmer plug if you want one. Indoor use.
